Secondary Spill Containment Systems

When a drum leaks or an Intermediate Bulk Container fails, your secondary containment system is what stops hazardous liquids from spreading across your floor, into drains, or harming your team.

To ensure your facility meets the strict requirements for dangerous goods storage in NZ, secondary containment should always be used during decanting processes. Stay compliant and protect your workplace with our range of quality secondary spill containment systems below.

The Right Secondary Spill Containment for Every Setup

SpillBase stocks a full range of Secondary Containment products (Bunded Pallets and Trays) for safe containment for all sizes of containers from 1 litre to 200 litre drums and 1000 litre IBCs.

Our secondary containment systems are constructed from chemical-resistant polyethylene that won't corrode, rust, or react with the substances being stored.

Drum Containment Pallets

Our drum containment pallets hold two or four 200-litre drums, with sump capacities ranging from 250 to 510 litres. Removable grates make inspection and cleaning straightforward, while forklift entry points allow easy positioning.

Ideal for workshops, warehouses, and production areas where drums are stored or decanted. For sites handling flammable liquids, pair your drum pallets with a chemical storage cabinet to meet storage segregation requirements.

IBC Spill Pallets

Designed for 1000-litre intermediate bulk containers, our IBC spill containment pallets provide the 110% containment capacity required for single IBC storage. Low-profile designs keep the IBC at a practical working height for valve access and decanting.

Spill Decks

When space is tight or forklift access isn't available, spill decks offer a low-profile alternative to standard pallets. Available in 1-, 2-, and 4-drum models, these 15cm high spill decks allow for the safe manual loading and unloading of drums.

Expansion bladders are available for sites needing additional sump capacity.

Outdoor Hardtops

For drums and IBCs stored outside, our hardtop secondary containment systems combine spill containment with weather protection. The roll-top cover and swing-out doors keep contents secure, while built-in sumps capture any leaks.

Essential for fuel storage areas, chemical compounds, and any outdoor location where rain ingress would compromise your containment capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is secondary containment for spills?

Secondary containment is a backup system that catches and holds hazardous liquids if your primary container fails, leaks, or spills during handling.

It"s typically a bunded pallet, spill deck, or containment tray that sits beneath drums, IBCs, or tanks—providing a barrier between the substance and your floor, drains, and the wider environment.

What is the difference between a spill pallet and a spill deck?

Height and access. Spill pallets sit at heights up to over 70 cm with larger sump quantities, requiring a forklift to load drums. Spill decks are low-profile, with heights of 15 cm, allowing for manual drum handling and easier access to drum tops for decanting.

How much containment capacity do I need?

For most hazardous substances, your secondary spill containment must hold at least 110% of your largest container"s capacity, or a percentage of your total storage volume—whichever is greater. The exact requirement depends on the hazard classification of your substances and the size of your containers.

For example, storing a single 1000-litre IBC of corrosive liquid typically requires at least 1100 litres of containment capacity. WorkSafe's online Hazardous Substances Calculator can help you determine your specific obligations based on what you're storing.
